Our Early History

Seems to me that the alumni of
the first high school in Dearborn Heights District #4 have been all but
forgotten. I was a member of the last graduating class of Haston Junior
High School in 1959 (134 classmates). Prior to this time, all students
for high school were bussed out of the area. After the 1959 graduation,
Haston (which also had a kindergarten class for many years for those students
across Telegraph Road) added a class each year until it became a full-fledged
and an accredited High School. In essence, my graduating class (123 classmates)
of 1963 were seniors for 5 years. Our rival was Riverside High School.
Yes, it's true there were only three graduating classes from Haston High
School (1963, 1964 and 1965), but we did exist and should be considered
alumni. My brother graduated from the first graduating class of Crestwood
High School in 1966.
For 19 years we lived in the
same house but the address changed from Garden City to Dearborn Township
to Dearborn 6 and then to Dearborn Heights which became incorporated in
April 1963.
I have been the Executive Assistant
to the Public Works Director for Orange County Government for 27 years
in Orlando, Florida and was a 1965 graduate of the Detroit College of Business.
My brother, Lee who attended Eastern Michigan University, was the first
recipient of the John Philip Sousa Award from Crestwood High School and
is a musician/entertainer living in Orange, Orange County, California.

am interested in getting in touch with classmates from theclass of 1963.
My family lived on Berwyn Ave. in Dearborn and we moved to Maryland in
1960. When I left Haston, Mr. Hogancamp was the principal, and he was a
great person. Some of my classmates were: Bobby Wydick, Jody Clark, Buddy
Clark, Diane Crytxer, Bernard (Pinky) Forfinski, Eddy Warner, Tom Ivonski
(sp?), Jan Rueter, Sherry Liphold. My husband Don and I have been married
for 39 years; we have two children and three grandchildren. We are retired
and live on 7 acres in a small town called Leonardtown. We live close to
the Potomac River and spend much of our time on the beach fishing, swimming,
and enjoying wildlife. |

After college at EMU and DIT, I applied for a chemist position at a company in Detroit called Udylite.
It was bought several times by various conglomerates such as Occidental Petroleum, Ascaro, and now Cookson
Electronics, where have been employed as a field chemical engineer for now, my gosh, 35 years.
I have a wife of 35 years, 4 grandkids, and now live in Cincinnati, OH and have lived there for 25 years.
I do have some Upper Peninsula, MI property lake frontage near Lake Superior in the Copper Country
on an inland lake and enjoy hunting and fishing. I have been out of touch with Dearborn Heights for many years.

I'M A GRADUATE OF 64'. HASTON WAS JUST ACROSS THE VALLEY FROM MY
HOUSE ON VERNON. I WAS AT HASTON FOR MY KINDERGARTEN 1/2 YR. THEN WENT TO
BRAINARD FOR THE 1/ST GRADE. THEN WENT ON TO DIVINE CHILD UNTIL THE END OF THE
8/TH GRADE. I REENTERED HASTON IN 61' FOR THE 9/TH. AFTER GRADUATION GOT
MARRIED HAD 2 CHILDREN. DIVORCED IN 79' WENT ON TO COLLEGE FOR THE NEXT 10 YRS.
OR SO. LAWRENCE TECH/ HENRY FORD/ TAUGHT AT WASHTENAW AND THEN WENT ON TO
MADONNA FOR MY MASTERS. WORKED AT G.M. AS MECHANICAL ENGINEER FOR ALL THOSE YRS.

Gauchey: I graduated with the Haston class of '65. I'm an engineer
working in the automotive automation manufacturing field. I have two degrees
from Lawrence Tech. Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Management. I've
been in this field for 35 years. I've been in Program management for the
last 6 years since I found I was unable to cope with the boredom of design
engineering. Now the business aspect is driving me to look forward to retirement.

Donna Bennetts
- After graduating from the newly built,
very small Crestwood High in 1966, having a handful of jobs, and graduating from college I found my notch
in the field of Criminal Justice working for the city police and finally the Michigan State Police. I have traveled the world.
My trips to Japan and Italy were wonderful. My husband and I have one daughter who is a high school teacher and also operates a
successful home-based business called, "The Pampered Chef." She is married to a U.S. Marine Captain; they have two handsome sons.
They are deployed all over the world. In our spare time we find ourselves planning for our retirement. I can't believe I'm
55 years old! My brother Daryl died in 2003 of Pancreatitus in his home in Caseville, MI. Both of my parents are deceased,
both died of lung cancer from smoking. I am the last of the Bennetts. Because of this I want to live a long life. I try very hard to
make every single day of my life count. I keep very busy. I don't smoke, drink or take drugs. I
eat healthy and work out.
I deeply love my husband. My life is good.

Gail (Goodall) Welch - I was class Secretary and have done all the reunions
except the 30 year, due to other family commitments that year. I am looking
forward to the 35th in 2003! Gosh that sounds awful. I don't even feel
35, but of course I am.

I took early retirement from being a bookkeeper for more years than I care to
think about. I had moved to Santa Clara, CA the day after I graduated from high
school and I'm still there and loving it. I have three children and six
grandchildren. My husband, Charlie, and I love to travel and spend a lot of

two graduating classes is rather ... "special." (1969, 1970) Boy was H.S. fun.
It just kept getting better. AHHH. I am currently a General Sales Manager for an
Agricultural Firm near Richmond, VA. Still married to Bonnie and have three
children. Youngest is 18 and a senior in H.S. Others starting their lives. I can
definitely see light at the end of the tunnel. And yes, it is great being alive.

Daryl Bennetts - died suddenly in 2003 of
Pancreatitus in his beautiful home in Caseville, MI. Daryl retired as a Master
CNC Professional Machinist. He loved to fish, hunt, golf and play his acoustic and
electric guitars. Daryl was divorced, never remarried. No children. Daryl was an
avid reader. He is fondly missed by the only surviving member's of his family
his sister and brother-in-law, and many friends at Crestwood High School,
graduating class of 1971.

Carolyn Gadigian - After graduating from Crestwood,
I attended HFCC and worked as a legal secretary at a local
law firm. In 1983 I moved to Miami, Florida where I
continued working in the legal field. In 1988 I moved to
West Palm Beach, Florida where I currently reside. After
getting my B.S. in Computer Information Systems in 1998 I
took at job in the telecommunications field as a data
warehouse analyst, and worked my way into project
management. Aside from hurricane clean up & repair, for fun
I enjoy biking (trail and road), kayaking, hiking, and my
foremost passion - underwater hockey. I made the U.S.
Women's underwater hockey team in 1996 and competed in
Durban, South Africa. I continue to compete at various
tournaments around the U.S. and I hope to make the U.S.
Women's Masters team for the 2008 World Championship. I

Crestwood. I lived with my Aunt, Uncle and Cousin, behind the school. I was very
good friends with Tina Cosenza, Heidi Dittman, Steve Harvey, Ramson Posh (?). My
cousin Kathryn (Kitty) Szabo, graduated in 1977 from Crestwood. She passed away
in 1998 from Breast Cancer. I miss her dearly. I live in the Mid-Michigan area.
I have four sons, 20, 16, 12, & 10. I am recently divorced. I think often about
my good friends that I made that year, and all the fun we had. I would love to

Davis - After a 20 year career in the Army, I am now a software developer
and systems administrator for a German real estate investment company.
I have a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems Management from the
University of Maryland and was elected to the National Honor Society of
Phi Kappa Phi. I live in Wuerzburg, Germany with my wife of 17 years Yvonne
and our son Daniel. For those who knew my sister Kimberly, class of '78,
she was a programmer/analyst for IBM in Tucson, AZ until she passed away
in 1996 during a liver transplant.

a cure for alopecia and it will probably be my life's work.

married Dave Kuptz class of 1970, moved to California, divorced and moved
back to Michigan in 1997. I became a Workers' Compensation Examiner,
supervision, management and then onto team leader. Upon moving back to
Michigan, I adjusted claims for General Motors for the states of
Connecticut, Mississippi, Alabama and Pennsylvania, as a litigation
specialist. I remarried my current husband, Cliff, who is a quadriplegic.
I stay home to take care of him and all of the paper trails this job
incurs, doctors, lawyers and State Farm Insurance. I am back in school
changing careers...go figure...like I have a lot of work time left, but
just in case this economy never really works out, I need to be prepared. I
live in Stanton Michigan and have two grown daughters with a total of six
grand children. Having the chance to live in the country has been
wonderful, though I do miss California very much and may very well go back
to live out my life if the opportunity presents it self. I have survived
breast cancer and just met my five year anniversary. My husband has been
experiencing significant medical problems over the past two years, which
has brought me much stress and concern. I'm hoping some old friends might
find this site so we can chat and remember old times, which seems like
such a long time ago. |

- I also attended Fairview, which was kindergarten and first
grade only, and Wallaceville, which went to 7th grade. Both of these school are
no longer in existence. Riverside went from 8th to 12th grade, and our class,
the class of 1975, was the largest graduating class of some 300 seniors or
so. Enrollment declined until the last graduating class 1985, which my sister,
Theresa (Smigelski) Mergl belonged to (She now has 5 children ages 11 and under
and is living in Maryland.) Riverside then became a Middle School and Crestwood
became the area High School. I and my husband of over 20 years live in Westland
and are both Horticultural Technicians, taking care of plants in interior
plantscapes, such as offices, malls, hospitals, etc. We are also musicians and
have a studio in our home. This comes in handy with our son who is a senior
this year in the music program at Western Michigan University. He will be
going to China in April with the WMU Orchestra to perform on the Great Wall. I
also have a custom sewing business - and here Mrs. Everts thought I'd never
accomplish anything-ha ha. We also enjoy our '71 Dodge Charger. Let's go cruise

husband John and I live in Winnetka, Illinois, and have three children:
Katherine (1985), Maureen (1987), and Alexander (1990). I have a BA from
Michigan State University and worked for United Airlines from 1973 to 2003.
