English as a Second Language
ESL Program goals:
The goal of our ESL program is to provide English language learners with specialized teaching support as well as academic support in the areas of listening, speaking, reading and writing, and the social language necessary to be successful in the general education classroom.
How are students identified?
At the time of enrollment into the district every parent or guardian is required to complete a Home Language Survey. The surveys are reviewed to determine which student may be a potential ESL student.
How are Students assessed for English Proficiency?
Students are assessed using the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs (Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English State-to-State for English Language Learners) as well as the Woodcock Munoz Language Survey.
How are services provided?
ESL tutors/teachers deliver the ESL instruction. The ESL tutors/teachers provide both tutorial and instructional methods to the student. The ESL instruction is provided in most cases by means of a pull-out program, which is determined by individual student need. The remainder of the student’s day is spent included in the general education classes with on going monitoring of the student’s progress in a collaborative method between the tutor/teacher and the classroom teacher.
Languages represented by our students include:
Arabic, Urdu, Ukrainian, Tagalog, Chinese, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Macedonian, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Romanian, Bulgarian, Albanian, Gujrati, Bosnian, French, German
