RIVERSIDE MIDDLE SCHOOL RECEIVES RECOGNITION FOR WELLNESS EFFORTS
Riverside Middle School has been recognized by the Fuel Up to Play 60
program for outstanding efforts to help students eat healthy and move more.
Recognition certificates were awarded to the school by the United Dairy
Council of Michigan and the Detroit Lions. In a lunch-time pep rally,
Principal Gribble presented the certificates to students Rheanna Ackling,
Selva Haidar, Ameera Hashwi, and Michael Hamdi, who volunteered to serve as
Fuel Up to Play 60 Program Advisors for the 2011/2012 school year.
More than 60,000 schools across the United States are participating in Fuel
Up to Play 60. Launched by National Dairy Council, local Dairy Councils and
National Football League (NFL), in collaboration with United States
Department of Agriculture (USDA), the program encourages youth to consume
nutrient-rich foods and achieve at least 60 minutes of physical activity
every day.
“Fuel Up to Play 60 has really taken off in Riverside Middle School. Because
it focuses on both healthy eating and physical activity, and encourages
student involvement and leadership, it’s something our entire faculty and
student body can work on together”, says Principal Gribble. “Next year, we
plan to increase our participation by applying for grants from Fuel Up to
Play 60 to fund more activities and getting more participation from staff
and students.”
As a private-public partnership effort, Fuel Up to Play 60 shares the
ambitious yet attainable goals outlined in First Lady Michelle Obama’s
childhood obesity platform “Let’s Move!” which aims to curb childhood
obesity within a generation. It is possible that today’s children could
become the first American generation with a shorter life expectancy than
their parents. One-third of American children are overweight or obese. The
obesity prevalence is about three to four times that of just one generation
ago, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
